The California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement and the California Tomato Farmers cooperative held food safety tours in Santa Maria and Ventura. Fourteen representatives from major sectors of the industry gathered with auditors from the USDA and CDFA to partake in the inspections of a tomato packinghouse and tomato and leafy greens fields as well. The tours during the day gave the roundtable discussions at the completion, much food for thought. The review allowed different facets of the industry and the auditing process observed during the day to be discussed. The program allowed for an awareness and exchange of information for those on both sides of the audit. Burger King, Costco, Dine Equity, ProAct, Yum Brands, Jack in the Box, Del Taco, Markon, Carl’s Jr., and In-N-Out Burger participated in the program. Scott Horsfall, CEO of the LGMA stated, “Both the LGMA and CTF were founded on the belief that mandatory government inspections are an essential component to improve food safety, build consumer confidence and protect public health so it was natural for us to partner on this tour.”
