On this episode of Behind the Greens, we join Peri & Sons to take a look at the company's innovative onion growing program. Jessica Peri, Retail Sales Manager, introduces us to the 2012 Sweetie Sweet crop.

The company is excited about the beautiful crop with good yields. One of the characteristics of Sweetie Sweet is its nice light skin in addition to its to its shiny and marbleized appearance. The company's partnership with National Onion Labs has allowed Peri & Sons to give its customers the confidence they need to know that the company is offering a true sweet onion. The partnership has also allowed the grower to perfect the variety in the field because the company receives a field mapping of what the varieties are doing and how they are reacting to certain elements. In this sense, the company can offer a better and consistent flavor every year because the company does the selections and the breeding of the onions.

The company is also looking forward to bringing on new customers this season, expanding into Canada and he Northeast. The company can offer more onions for a one-stop shopping experience.

Peri & Sons has also added new red sweet onions to its conventional and organic program. David Peri, President, joins us to share in the delight of the newer addition. What the company is trying to do is develop a sweet red onion that has a flavor and pungency that is consistent because as far as sweet and pungent, there are a lot of inconsistencies within the variety. The company is happy with how the development is going.
