Heavy Storms Pound Florida

FLORIDA – Transportation seems to be at a standstill in some areas for those in South Florida. As heavy rain moves out of the region, surrounding areas work to recover from the wet, and in some places severe, weather.

The Weather Channel reported that nearly two feet of rain fell in some places, with heavy rain and flooding extending as far south as The Keyes. Meanwhile, AccuWeather reported that over 4 inches of rain was produced on Thursday with the next bout of precipitation.

Gary Wishnatzki, Owner, Wish Farms“There is nothing left growing in our area,” Gary Wishnatzki, Owner of Florida-based Wish Farms, told ANUK. “The rains are beneficial in replenishing the aquifer. Florida has been in a drought. This is the best time of years for us to get heavy rains, because no crops are impacted.”

The Weather Channel stated that nearly 150 flights were canceled flying in or out of Miami International Airport on Wednesday, with 50 more canceled at Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

Jon Erdman, Senior Meteorologist, The Weather Channel"The heaviest rain fell across a strip of South Florida, clearing much of the area from drought, as well as parts of Florida Panhandle, which hadn't been in significant drought," said Weather Channel Senior Meteorologist Jon Erdman. "However, a rather large swath of Central Florida still has lingering severe long-term drought, despite this week's rain. That should be gradually eaten away as we head into the heart of the state's rainy season."

Florida news source Local 10 noted that though the heavy rains may be over for South Florida, there is still flooding and standing water covering the roads in some parts of the state, delaying traffic.

As for the storm systems themselves, AccuWeather noted that the most severe weather has moved up and eastern into New England. Florida will still experience more rain over the next few days, though it will not be torrential as before and lessening even more by the end of the weekend.
