Brazilian Grapes

Brazil - Late Fall and Winter are bringing about a transition in the grape industry. Importers will be shifting their gaze south to Brazil, Chile, and Peru for supplies. Brazil has been experiencing some difficult weather this season and as a result the country's yield is being highly affected. Ronnie Potash, Domestic Food Buyer with Napol and Napol, commented about the recent weather occurrences in Brazil. He explained that due to rain, Brazil's grapes are not faring as well in volume and quality as in previous seasons, resulting in low impact on the domestic market. If the case were reversed, the domestic market here would be at a disadvantage. For California's domestic product, quality is average and volume is high resulting in a healthy market outlook for Fall and Winter.

David Dever, President and CEO of Pandol Bros. Incorporated, supports the level of influence of Brazil's product on the US market, stating, "Brazilian grapes will not flood the market. Brazil's volume to the US is relatively small. They are good grapes and we have had very good results with them in the past but the importation of Brazilian grapes into the US market will be limited for a number of reasons in the future." Gordon Robertson, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Sun World International, LLC, explained the impact of Brazilian grapes on the domestic market: "Overall, both customer acceptance and pricing have started stronger than in 2010 for our Brazilian green grapes. With California green grapes having struggled with quality compared to an average year, many of our customers have been looking for an alternate supply and the quality of our early arrivals have been good." Mr. Robertson maintains the perspective that the domestic market will see an increase in the price of grapes through Thanksgiving into December when supplies begin to decrease both from Brazil and California.
