Central American Produce is finishing up its cantaloupe and honeydew harvest out of Honduras and is gearing up for its second cycle. The company will start in Guatemala around March 3rd.

Brad Edmonds, Melon Category Manager and Sales, tells AndNowUKnow, “We’re maintaining volumes for cantaloupes and honeydews, but it’s been slow this week because of the rain and snow up north and around the central U.S. The market has been strong for the last few weeks though and we’ll continue to remain strong in the weeks ahead.”

Prices for the melon category are relatively stable, but have been rising a bit high lately. Cantaloupes, which average around $12.00 are now up to around $14.00 to $15.00 on the east coast and South Florida. Honeydews, which average around $9.00 to $10.00, are up to $13.00 to $14.00. Watermelons are currently sitting at approximately $0.50 per pound. “The market is pretty strong right now,” continues Edmonds. “There’s less volume coming out of Mexico, but the demand is still there.”

The cantaloupe and honeydew season will end by the first few weeks of May for the offshore deal. The watermelon season will end by the first and second week of April once Florida kicks in and the company gets into domestic melons.

“It all depends on the weather and the second cycle coming out of Honduras and Guatemala,” Edmonds tells us. “As long as the weather holds, we’ll have good volumes and good quality.”

Stay tuned to AndNowUKnow for updates on the melon season.

Central American Produce
