YERINGTON, NV - Peri & Sons Farms, a third-generation family farm growing onions in Nevada and California, is rolling out compostable PLU stickers on its Organic White, Yellow and Red onions. The company will showcase the new stickers alongside its Earthbag® packaging at booth #830 during the IFPA Global Produce & Floral Show, October 14 to 16 in Orlando, Florida.
"Produce stickers are small, but they add up. Traditional PLU stickers are made from plastic. They can't break down, so they often end up in landfills or contaminate compost streams. It's one of the most common complaints we hear from consumers, especially shoppers working to cut waste at home," said Kelsey Weingart, Brand Manager, Marketing for Peri & Sons Farms.
Compostable isn't the same as recyclable. Peri & Sons' new stickers break down naturally; no recycling plant is needed, so you can compost the sticker right along with the onion peel.
"Sustainability isn't a checkbox for us," said Kelsey. "We take it seriously, and we're always looking for new ways to bring that commitment into real life, down to the smallest detail of how our onions reach the shelf. It's a small sticker, but each one counts."
The stickers extend the work Peri & Sons started with Earthbag® packaging, which is plastic-free, compostable and recyclable. The company is also trialing paper tags and plastic-free mesh as it continues to reduce plastic across its packaging. Together, these steps give retailers a simple story to share with shoppers: USA-grown organic onions from a family farm that thinks in generations, not seasons.
The rollout is happening in phases. Retailers will see the new compostable stickers appear across Organic White, Yellow and Red onions as current inventory cycles through, with no change to how they order, stock or sell.
Show attendees can visit Peri & Sons at booth #830 to see the stickers up close and talk with the team about sustainable packaging, Sweetie Sweet® onions and the farm's Focus on Flavor commitment. Retailers can also contact their Peri & Sons Sales representative for rollout details.
