OXNARD, CA - With everything in the world seemingly moved online now, why should the fresh produce industry be any different? Jumping at the format shift and the chance to offer industry members from both the buy- and supply-sides a peek behind the scenes at its farms, Bobalu Berry Farms introduced its e-news, “10 o’clock Walk,” and has already seen great success with an increase in buyer subscribers.

Anthony Gallino, Vice President of Sales, Bobalu Berry Farms“We have really tried to stay close to our buyers and not overcommit, to be realistic on what is happening in the field and understand their challenges in keeping fruit on the shelves for shoppers. The weekly bulletin is another way to share insights and timely photos of what the fields look like today,” said Anthony Gallino, VP of Sales.

The "10 o’clock Walk" offers key insights into what the Bobalu team sees in the fields each week in regard to volume, weather, quality, and a current outlook for the fields in production. According to a release from the company, the bulletin has been especially helpful this season, helping Bobalu stay in constant communication with buyers on everything happening in the fields on a daily basis.

As the past year and a half have been atypical for everyone, Bobalu is no different, and the e-news communication channel has furthered the company’s sales team’s ability to focus on transparency. In turn, the team has been able to help its buyer partners navigate the market and upcoming opportunities to get Bobalu berries on display.

This has also increased buyer confidence, as they are able to watch field walks, checks on the fruit, tasting, and assessments on future viability of various plots for future seasons. Although COVID-19 has limited in-person contact, Bobalu’s innovative strategy has continued to strengthen its industry relationships through the lens of a camera.

Although the company’s peak season in Oxnard was behind this year due to weather, causing volumes to be less than usual for this time, conditions are expected to change as spring continues. The grower is also approaching its Santa Maria season and has put crops in the ground for the fall.

As the weather shifts toward more favorable conditions, Bobalu will be able to share the rest of the season with buyers to continue to help them stay informed and continue to get the most out of the berry season.
