How much do you get paid?

The United Fresh Produce Association has published the 2nd edition of its Produce Industry Compensation and Benefits Report, wherein average values are given for salaries of different positions within the produce industry, including CEO, COO, and various Vice President positions. In total, 32 position titles' statistics are listed.

Click here to purchase the full Report

The salary statistics do not name specific companies, and data is laid out in numerous ways for comparison purposes. For example, according to the report, CEOs in publicly held companies make an average base salary of $328,675 per year. Yet, when bonuses are included, the combined average is $501,702. Meanwhile, the combined yearly salaries and bonuses by region indicate that CEOs in the South make, on average, $675,466, while CEOs in the Midwest average $365,408.

"The information contained in this report represents the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date compensation and benefits data in the industry," the report states.

The 138-page report is the result of the 2nd United Fresh Produce Association's National Compensation Survey for the Fresh Produce Industry. In early March 2013, an online questionnaire was sent to produce industry members. All data regarding the specific companies being reported was then removed, and the final results were tabulated by Industry Insights, Inc., with the 2013 final report finished in June 2013.

However, it may not be appropriate to extrapolate from this data when considering an individual's current salary. In fact, in the introduction to the report, readers are warned against regarding the published statistics as absolute standards, and it is suggested instead to consider them to be more general guidelines. Many things can influence a person's pay, such as previous experience and bonuses based on individual or company performance.

The report is a professionally produced document. In the appendix, it explains the methodology of the survey in detail, including statistics regarding the number of participants for each category, and a blank copy of the survey form itself is also shown.

The report is available through the United Fresh website to paying members at the discounted price of $495, and it can also be purchased by non-members for the full price of $695.

This document is a very useful bird's eye view for the produce industry.

2013 Produce Industry Compensation and Benefits Report
