The Cold Train Express Intermodal Service has been in existence for 3.5 years. Shippers and receivers are becoming very confident with the service, as it has proven to be a reliable, cost effective and fast option. Additionally, many shippers and receivers are looking to reduce their carbon footprint, and Cold Train provides a good option to do that.

Patrick Boss, Director of Public Affairs, tells AndNowUKnow, "With continued relatively high fuel prices, shippers and receivers are looking for more cost effective and competitive transportation choices, and to diversify their transportation portfolio."

To keep up with demand and to prepare for future growth, Cold Train has continued to gradually add new state-of-the-art refrigerated containers to its fleet and has increased the size of its Quincy, Washington based fleet from about 100 containers in the summer of 2012 to nearly 450 containers currently.

In addition to shipping Washington State and Oregon produce and frozen foods eastbound to 19 states in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast, Cold Train is also bringing back frozen and refrigerated foods and some dry goods back to from the Midwest and East Coast from Washington State and Oregon. In other words, Cold Train ships loaded or full containers both directions to maximize utilization of equipment, which helps to reduce costs and provide both an inbound and outbound service for shippers and receivers.

"Moving forward," Patrick tells us, "Cold Train is going to continue to focus on providing a cost effective, reliable and fast service while also responding to the needs of shippers and receivers in terms of adding additional capacity and destinations. For example, Cold Train has also begun shipping Washington State refrigerated foods into the Toronto, Ontario area and will look to continue to expand service (as shippers and receivers request it) possibly into eastern Canada to destinations such as Montreal."

Cold Train
