Del Monte Fresh Produce is announcing that one of its subsidiaries agreed to join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' (CIW) Fair Food Program.
"We are pleased to join the Fair Food Program and continue our commitment to strong ethical sourcing standards which ensures that the products we sell are produced in a way that provides fair treatment for the workers in our supply chain. Our participation in the Fair Food Program demonstrates our commitment to improve the lives of the workers in our Florida fields and to the Florida tomato industry as a whole," said Paul Rice, Senior Vice President NA Operations.
Del Monte Fresh and a number of the US' largest retailers and restaurants are participating in the Fair Food Program. The program includes a price premium paid by corporate purchasers of Florida tomatoes of one penny per pound. Ultimately, this premium is added as a bonus to workers’ paychecks as part of the grower’s regular payroll process. As of January, over $11 million in FFP premiums have been paid out since January 2011, according to a statement from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' promotional materials.
