Florida has undergone several freeze events this winter, and we spoke to Dan Crowley, Sales Manager at Well-Pict, to get the latest on how Florida's strawberries are faring this week. Crowley discusses how Florida's ample water supply has assisted strawberry growers by allowing them to "ice down" the plants under a protective layer of water, which protects them from the freeze. Although production has been interrupted, this can contribute to higher brix levels in the berries themselves. Crowley also mentions that the supplies are in good standing, and that retail promotions haven't been compromised as a result of the freeze. Even though milder weather is expected in February, accurate forecasts are only reliable 6 to 8 days out, and with freezes continuing this week throughout the Southeast, strawberry growers will undoubtedly be monitoring the mercury closely.
