LOS ANGELES, CA - When people ask me what are some of my favorite summer activities, I give them a very AVO-ious answer. Yes, you guessed it! Eating avocados is a cherished hobby of mine and many other consumers, contributing to a tight market as the industry works to keep up with demand despite weather challenges. Gary Caloroso, Regional Business Development Director of The Giumarra Companies, filled me in with an avocado market update.
While Gary said the California avocado volume is currently lower because of the heat and last year’s fires, quality is excellent for the season, and the U.S. market should see very similar volume for Mexico and Peru this summer.
“Our industry continues to see increased consumer demand for avocados without the dramatic increase of supply,” he explained, adding that, in terms of price, the company is seeing a spike. “Demand always increases as we enter the summer months, but this season’s lack of supply has contributed greatly to the dramatic price increases.”
Though Gary noted the avocado market is much tighter than normal, it doesn’t look to have slowed down consumer desire for the fruit.
