RIVERSIDE, CA - Having grown up in California, I can attest to the fact that we’re all a little bit avocado obsessed. While the Hass variety is undeniably a superstar of the varieties, it turns out there are many making up this category that can help answer avocado craze.
I caught up with Index Fresh’s Director of Sales and Marketing, John Dmytriw, to find out more about the current avocado season, and all the avocados that make it, as well as what Index Fresh has to offer to growers and buyers.
“Retail and food service companies could be missing out on outstanding California varieties never before offered to them by their suppliers,” he says. “Many of these, like the Lamb Hass and Index Fresh’s Gem variety that we introduced last month, make for fantastic eating choices.”
Given that its Lamb Hass variety matures later in the season, Index Fresh’s move to incorporate additional varieties to support the avocado obsession makes total sense to me.
“Index Fresh will begin packing Lamb Hass in July, with this year’s season extending into August and possibly September,” John shares with me. “This avocado is ideal for the buyer who is looking to provide their customer with a high quality piece of fruit with tremendous flavor later in the season.”
The Lamb Hass is unquestionably delicious—take it from someone who knows—but John wants to ensure that each grower has the same opportunities to have their other varieties marketed properly and get the love they deserve.
“California growers are missing out on opportunities to have their fruit marketed and sold at retail and foodservice establishments,” John explains. “Our marketing programs are tailored toward creating added value to the grower, while at the same time highlighting the unique varieties they produce.
