With tomato supplies down sharply across the country, we spoke with Joe Bernardi, president of Bernardi & Associates, about the current status of the tomato market. Bernardi & Associates is a year-round, nation-wide broker and distributor of tomatoes, mixed vegetables and melons. Mr. Bernardi explained the ramifications of this winter's severe weather, including Mexico's "60 year" freeze event. Supplies are approximately 25% of normal, and quality has suffered as a result of weather complications. On the bright side, Florida's tomato growers are looking to be in great shape as their season is poised to get underway within the next two weeks, and April is expected to be a good month for tomatoes, in terms of supply and quality.
