PARMA, ID - Though onions are beloved in many a recipe, we can all agree that the tear-fest while chopping is the absolute worst. But finally, a new innovation in onions has arrived and will soon become more available to the public.

Met with rave reviews during its initial 2017-2018 season, Sunions, the tearless onion, will be shipping to select retailers this week. During its inaugural season, Sunions were a certifiable hit, racking up more than 1.2 billion consumer media impressions in print, web, radio, and television, popping up on ABC’s The Chew and Good Morning America. While the first batch of Sunions have already hit the market, more are maturing into the tearless, sweet onions making waves across the country.

Lyndon Johnson, Crop Sales Manager, Bayer Crop Science USA“We follow a strict process with our sensory team not to allow the release of Sunions until they reach peak flavor and tearlessness,” said Lyndon Johnson, Crop Manager for onions at BASF Vegetable Seeds, in a recent press release. “We’ve differentiated ourselves in the marketplace with a set of stringent quality requirements to maintain our brand promise.”

Over three decades of research, development, and natural hybridization by Nunhems Vegetable Seeds have gone into the new wonder onion (or wonion, if you prefer). A long-day sweet onion variety, Sunions are grown in Washington and Nevada, unlike many other long-day onions which are generally imported from South America. Though many other long-day onions lose their sweetness over time, Sunions become sweeter and even more tearless in storage.

A sensory panel utilizes a certification technique unique to the onion category to determine ship dates follow a tightly-controlled protocol, including multiple tests assessing flavor and tearlessness before the Sunions are approved for shipping.

The Sunions marketing plan includes produce manager education, point-of-sale materials, social media content, a consumer public relations campaign, and a targeted digital advertising program.
