Oppy's Pacific Rose™ Apples Dazzle in the New Year
- by Maggie Mead
VANCOUVER, CANADA - Snow White loves them, I love them, and so does pretty much everyone else. The popularity of apples is going nowhere, and Oppy is set to capitalize on that admiration with its fresh crop of Pacific Rose™ apples. Its current grower, Crane Family Orchards, is shipping this season’s crop of succulent spheres now.
“The reason why we’ve always had a great fit with the Cranes is because they have an export oriented mentality which is what we grew up with in New Zealand. They’re consistently striving to grow the best quality to compete in the global market,” said David Nelley, Vice President of Categories at Oppy, in a press release. “We value the Crane Family Orchards’ experience in growing and packing the best colored Pacific Rose apples in the world and we embrace taking their story to our customer base and consumers.”
Grown in the U.S., Pacific Rose apples, a Splendour-Gala cross originating in New Zealand, were introduced to North American retailers by Oppy almost two decades ago. Crane Family Orchards has been growing apples since 1912, when founder George Crane planted the orchard’s first three trees in Brewster, Washington. Now run by Crane sisters Rachel and Kaylan and spanning 1,300 acres, the grower has been producing Pacific Rose apples since 2001, much to the delight of consumers everywhere.
“The attraction to the apple came from my uncle who brought on the variety at the time,” said Rachel Crane, CEO of Crane Family Orchards. “It’s been a great variety for us and has helped my family’s farm stay independent. The apple has had great success in the export market. It’s a really pleasant eating apple with its delicate sweet flavor and we’re lucky it stores really well. We look forward to continue growing the best Pacific Rose possible as we head into the future.”
The Auckland, New Zealand-based brand owner, T&G Global, will be unveiling a fresh brand and brand positioning for the apple variety this month. The Cranes have been teasing the refreshed brand with the release of the new PLU.
