Welcome to Behind The Greens. On today's episode, Stemilt Growers joins us to discuss one of the keys to their success. In order to have Stemilt's world famous produce, you need to have Stemilt's world famous compost. The compost is hand crafted with wood chips, grass clippings and all the excess from its warehouse facilities and packing lines of apples and cherries. By combining the materials together with the yard waste and storing them centrally, the compost can produce a favorable 30 to 40 percent carbon to nitrogen ratio. The compost is then turned and aerated everyday, exposing it to oxygen and water. The ideal heat for cultivating the micro-organisms is a stable and constant 140 degree to 143 degrees. If the temperature increases to 180 degrees it will kill the microbes in the compost and turn all the potential nutrients to carbon. The procedures and temperatures are constantly monitored throughout the day to create an ideal and base for the planting season.

www.stemilt.com
