On this episode of Behind the Greens, Cecilia Rivera, Grape Quality Manager of Sun World International, joins us in the Coachella Valley to talk about the Midnight Beauty® grapes. Midnight Beauty® was introduced in the late 1990s to provide consumers with a unique black seedless grape. The grapes have an early ripening time which starts in the middle of May and peaks in June for the Coachella Valley. After June harvesting moves up north in the San Joaquin Valley which peaks in July and ends through mid-August. The two locations are perfect for growing these black grapes providing a perfect combination of sun, fertile soil and water. The Midnight Beauty® is a very sweet variety due to its high brix which measures out to be from 17 to 18 and has a very long shelf life lasting as long as 10 to 20 days.
