Super Starr International's Lance Peterson Discusses Melon Market

Mon. March 8th, 2021 - by Anne Allen

PHARR, TX - No matter the time of year, shoppers are drawn to the fresh flavors that melons offer. As we near spring, melons become an increasingly popular designation at retail. In order to better understand the melon market and what it means for buyers, I spoke with Lance Peterson, President at Super Starr International.

Lance Peterson, President, Super Starr International“Melon crop has been and is really good. We are seeing great quality and brix along with good flavor,” remarked Lance. “The weather has affected the market more than the crops. Freezing temperatures do not help sales of melons, unfortunately.”

With that in mind, however, the melon market is making a turnabout for the better, as volumes remain steady and should remain so throughout the season.

“The melons we grow can be cut a little more mature, making them sweeter and with better flavor because of the time it takes for them to be available in the U.S.,” Lance noted. “Continuous trialing of different varieties and types of melons helps us plant the best melons for our growing area. Next winter season, we will be offering a melon program that includes some specialty melons that are really good eating.”

Super Starr International is reporting steady melon volumes that it anticipates lasting throughout the rest of the season

With that said, be sure to keep Super Starr International in mind when building out your upcoming melon program.
