UNITEC S.p.A., an international group leader in manufacturing systems and plants for the processing of fresh fruit and vegetables, revealed some of its latest technology at the first annual UNI_DAY event this week. The event brought industry leaders together in Stockton, California to view the packinghouses of O-G Packing and Morada Produce Co. along with UNITEC's state-of-the-art technologies that include the defect sorting system CHERRY_VISION.

O-G Packing, with a 32-lane sorter and Morada produce with a 40-lane sorter are only two of four U.S. companies to have installed CHERRY_VISION. The UNITECH innovation, manufactured entirely in-house, helps packers improve quality selection and increase market profitability through online, non-destructive detection of external and internal cherry quality, further than an extremely accurate selection by size and color..

Lugo, Italy-based, UNITEC S.p.A established its U.S. operations at the end of 2012 and the headquarters were opened in Stockton, California in January of 2013.

Valerio Pollini, Project Sales Manager, UNITEC S.p.A, tells AndNowUKnow, "As a group we wanted to ensure that our clients did not have to deal with a remote location but local resources; hence our establishment on the West Coast."

Pollini, added, "It is important to us that we do things right, and that begins with the customer and is enhanced with our quality and efficiency. We tailor each project for our customers and want to make sure that we are available anytime, day or night."

As the guests entered the different operations, each packing house buzzed with the latest technology. All the bells and whistles create quite an atmosphere as a cherry moves from the beginning to the end of the sorter in under seven minutes.

The O-G Packing operations handle a capacity of 22 tons per hour and Morada manages 24 tons per hour. With the UNITEC capabilities these packers only see a negligible % of the lot go to the return from the sizers.

Daniel Moznett, Director of Marketing, Grower Direct, tells AndNowUKnow, "UNITEC's capabilities have allowed us to more efficiently and knowledgably address our growers' needs. We look forward to our future work with this innovator."

As each piece of fruit is ushered through the cherry lane and passes through CHERRY_VISION it snaps a series of multiple images, catching the cherry's dimensions and qualities as it rotates along its path. The technology immediately assesses the fruit, comparing its specs to what has been logged into the analytics as the "perfect cherry." A range of analytics from size range, or waste to pre-sorted fruit is sent to the grower so they know the full scope of their lot.

CHERRY_VISION sorts cherries based on external skin defects, irregular shapes as well as internal problems like fruit softness.. With current labor challenges, the technology also significantly reduces the hand-labor involved in selection by manual sorting, while maximizing efficiency.

UNITEC
