Well-Pict Berries: Oxnard Field Innovation

Thu. February 16th, 2012

Dan Crowley, Sales Manager for Well-Pict Berries, joins us in this episode of Behind the Greens. Today, we'll take you to their strawberry growing operation in Oxnard, CA. Well-Pict maintains both organic and commercial production here, with an emphasis on organic processes that benefit both the fruit and the land. A "Bug Vacuum" literally sucks up harmful insects right off the bloom, while beneficial insects, like ladybugs, provide an all-natural form of biological pest management; no additional pesticides are necessary. Well-Pict growers also utilize cover crops, so that the growing fields are allowed to regenerate naturally and produce their own nitrogen fertilizer. Another innovation is the company's harvester machine, which allows picking crews to deposit full trays on a moving conveyor belt during production; it's an excellent way to both maintain clean trays and fruit and eliminate safety concerns for workers in the rows.

www.wellpict.com
