Apples from Japan's Aomori Prefecture will be tracked using the Quick Response barcode system (QR codes), according to the Japan Daily Press. These barcodes will show each fruit’s individual history. Aomori Prefecture produces nearly all of Japan's exported apples. This new innovation is being released in order to ease food safety concerns from Japan.

Each Aomori apple now has a unique QR code, which can be scanned by a consumer using a QR code reader on their smartphone. Even if apples are harvested from the same tree, each fruit will get its own unique code. When scanned, the smartphone will show the apple's production history. This information includes which farm the apple came from as well as information about the frequency of pesticide applications. Additionally, a photo of and message from the farmer who grew the fruit is also displayed. The information is available in Japanese, Chinese and English.

This new program is expected to start during the harvest season next fall.
