SACRAMENTO, CA - As any true millennial would attest to, brunch—and avocados—are life. So much so that any place that offers an avocado-themed brunch is instantly akin to heaven. The California Avocado Commission read my brunch-addled mind, and in conjunction with Hawks Provisions and Public House, gave guests the opportunity to experience the opening of California avocado season. I assure all of you avocado aficionados, it did not disappoint.

Jan DeLyser, Vice President of Marketing, California Avocado Commission“The California Avocado Commission Season Opener brunch at Hawks Public House and Provisions is an example of events the Commission does to build excitement around the California avocado season,” Jan told me. “Connecting personally with trade and consumer media and bloggers at the top of their respective fields helps build engagement with them and their followers, spreading California avocado messaging in creative ways.”

Chef Mike Fagnoni, Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Sacramento's Hawk's Provisions and Public House, preparing California Avocado and Roasted Beet Salad with Navel Oranges and Olive Tapenade

Chef Mike Fagnoni, Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Sacramento’s Hawks Provisions and Public House, created two new dishes that popped with fresh, seasonal ingredients grown in California. By selecting locally-sourced ingredients, CAC and Chef Fagnoni wanted to highlight the importance of supporting local communities while minimizing the impact of long-distance transportation on the produce.

“As a California chef, I try to craft my restaurant’s menus around what’s in season locally, as it ensures we’re using the freshest and best-tasting ingredients,” said Fagnoni. “Now that California avocados have arrived, I’ll be incorporating them into a number of dishes because their creamy texture truly elevates any recipe.”

And his new recipes, California Avocado and Roasted Beet Salad with Navel Oranges and Olive Tapenade, as well as Chilled California Avocado Soup with English Peas and Preserved Lemon Créme Fråiche, did exactly that! The other two recipes, Avocado Tartine with Grilled Shrimp, Asparagus, Wild Arugula, and Homemade Dill Chips; and Avocado Chocolate Tart, with a Salted Caramel Whipped Cream and a Chili Almond Brittle, rounded off the four-course meal fit for any avocado queen.
