Volatile weather has been the story of the summer for California produce, and strawberry growers have felt the effects. Sarah Hoxie discussed the latest developments with several California strawberry marketers. Dan Crowley, Sales Manager at Well Pict, mentioned the unusually wet month of June and cold weather causing delays to some areas, but berry quality and prices are relatively good. Cindy Jewell, Director of Marketing at California Giant Berry Farms, stated that the crop is back on track and supplies are steady and should remain so for the duration of the summer months. Volume is slightly light, but quality is excellent. Craig Casca, Vice President at Red Blossom, echoed the statements in regards to quality, and mentioned that the market is between an 8 and 9, which should remain stable though August.
