SANTA MARIA, CA - Sourcing both from its homestead and the desert region of California, Gold Coast Packing reports that the roller coaster ride we might usually associate with broccoli and cauliflower is currently more—pardon the pun—coastal.
“Right now we have a very good supply of both broccoli and cauliflower to meet all of our customers’ needs. We have been seeing great quality out of both regions, and we see no disruption of supply through the end of the desert season,” Crystal Chavez, the team’s Marketing Coordinator, tells me.
Those needs look to be ever-increasing, too, as Crystal reports a change in consumer demands that might hint at a new hot spot in produce.
“Broccoli and cauliflower have been our staple items for years. Recently, we have noticed that broccoli is growing more and more popular with our customers. Broccoli may be the new on trend veggie to look out for!” she hints.
Another thing to look out for, as always, is the weather. When I ask about what to expect, Crystal says the area has seen more rain this winter than in most recent years, and more is expected this weekend.
“Most of the storms that we have expected to receive have skipped over the Santa Maria area, but even with that we have received quite a bit of rain,” she tells me. “The good thing is with those storms, and with the storm headed our way, we have received a lot of wind which has helped dry the fields and keep quality in very great conditions.”
