VANCOUVER, CANADA - Living in California, the first inkling of summer heat brings to mind memories of enjoying delicious berries. Whether it be strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries—you can’t go wrong. Adding something new and exciting into the mix, Oppy has released the unique Haskap berry variety in the Vancouver area, and is working to expand to retailers in other markets. This could mean a whole new sweet treat for consumers for summers to come.
“Haskap berries offer consumers a welcome reprieve from the usual produce items that they’ve grown accustomed to, and in the current circumstances a little bit of novelty can be welcome,” said Garland Perkins, Senior Manager of Insights and Innovation. “Oppy is continually looking for new, under-the-radar varieties that bring a lot to the table for consumers and retailers. Thanks to its versatility as a healthy snack and its ease of use from a culinary perspective, Haskap berries have plenty of untapped potential that can be realized with the right promotions and partnerships.”
Adding to its extensive produce portfolio, the Haskap berry variety has been grown for over 200 years in Japan, but the most modern version that Oppy has introduced was only recently developed at the University of Saskatchewan in 2000. According to a press release, based on the high level of antioxidants in the berries, Haskaps have a multitude of anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective, and cardio-protective properties.
The Haskap berries tout a sweet and tangy taste. Combining some of the best elements of berries that are already known and loved, the Haskaps' flavor profile includes notes of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. They also offer a finish that is evocative of candy. Combined with the larger sizing, these berries are the perfect healthy treat for kids.
First releasing the new berries in Vancouver as a trial to test how Haskaps would do at retail, as well as the longevity of the product, Oppy took this as an opportunity to raise consumer attention, even having the new variety featured in Edible Vancouver Magazine. The successful end result led to the expansion of the product to other Vancouver retailers, and increased efforts to distribute Haskap’s to other markets as the demand increases.
