Southern Specialties Expands Persian Lime Presence in Guatemala

<p>Southern Specialties has expanded the company’s presence in Guatemala, growing and shipping Persian limes. Southern Specialties planted limes in Guatemala in 2001, as part of a diversification program for coffee farmers, according to a press release. </p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>“We feel our Southern Selects limes from Guatemala are a natural,” said Robert Colescott, President and CEO of Southern Specialties “ Limes have long been a staple in both the foodservice and retail industry. An expanding demographic base incorporates limes in their daily cuisines. Consumers have discovered the fruit’s versatility as an ingredient used for marinades, drinks, seasonings and garnishes.”</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>The company has planted additional lime groves as part of the growing program, in the area of Petén where it will begin harvesting 450 hectares this season. Production from this area will reach 1000 hectares by next year. Total production from Guatemala will reach 2000 hectares.</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>Southern Selects Persian limes are slightly lighter in color than Mexican limes and offer an exceptionally high juice content and are packed with vitamin C.
