Wind, rain, freezes, and on the other hand- a drought! But, what does it mean for summer citrus? I talked to the professionals to find out!

Paul Huckabay, Western & Import Citrus Sales Manager for Duda Farm Fresh Foods, explained, “There was some really cold weather in Chile, recently. Prior to that, we’ve gone from drought conditions to finally getting some good rain in early June, to then a freeze. I think the freeze will probably have more of an impact on the lemons than anything and that’s primarily just because lemons are more susceptible to cold damage.”

Chief Marketing Officer for Seald Sweet International, David Mixon, stated, “We’ve had some very cold weather in certain areas which definitely has created a reduction of harvesting for another three or four days.”

Mark Hanks, VP of Sales & Marketing for DNE World Fruit Sales, said, “We’re sourcing from Chile, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, and a little bit out of Peru. We’re dealing with rain, wind, some snow, freezes, and what’s even stranger in a country like Chile is we’re also dealing with a drought situation in the northern part.”

Although the weather has caused a bit of a delay on harvest, quality and flavor will hopefully be right on target. Thank you for watching “The Bloom!”
