This week on “The Bloom,” I had the chance to interview three major watermelon marketers, who are gearing up for the 4th of July holiday.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Ryan Van Groningen, Sales Manager of Van Groningen & Sons, stated, “well the Spring time and the weather we had over the past couple of months has pushed production back considerably. We’re finally getting some warmer weather now, which is helping things out but it kind of causes a gap.”<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Claudie Berry from Borders Melon Company explained, “It’s been so dry in other areas, it hasn’t affected us so much here in Texas with our own crop because we have had so much water to irrigate with.”<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Director of Quality Control for Dulcinea, Pablo Valdes, said quote, “Right now we have excellent weather in both the East and West coast productions. Right now the demand is strong because everyone is getting ready for the summer and the 4th of July.”<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">It may have been a rough start for some suppliers, but as long as mother nature cooperates, the rest of the watermelon season looks absolutely sweet.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
