LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE, CA - There is a rising holiday tradition we like to support here at AndNowUKnow and hope to see become a staple across the industry. I speak, of course, to Allen Lund Company’s (ALC) annual participation in Navidad en el Barrio.
“We are calling on our friends in the produce industry to see what they may have located in Oregon, California, Arizona, or Southern Texas,” Nora Trueblood, Director of Marketing and Communications, shares. “These areas have been of great support in the past, donating product we could combine into loads coming to Southern California for distribution.”
Navidad en el Barrio was established in 1972, organizing food donations to distribute before December 25 to families in need in the Southern California region. Every year since, between 15,000 and 25,000 families have been included, spanning San Diego, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Orange County, and Los Angeles.
The Allen Lund Company has proudly participated with Navidad en el Barrio since 2004, first providing transportation to agencies that distribute groceries, then expanding its investment by coordinating fruit and vegetable donations.
“Until 2007, the groceries were mostly non-perishable items, except for chicken and cheese. Now, the groceries include fresh fruits, vegetables, and more nutritious items. The project has grown large enough that every family ends up with two bags of items not just to prepare their holiday dinner, but to keep for additional meals and snacks,” Nora shares.
This year’s distribution is Saturday, December 10, and perishable items can be received up until Thursday, December 8.
If you have an interest in helping to feed thousands of the most in-need families this year, reach out to Nora.
“We will provide the logistics if you can provide the product!” she challenges. “Now more than ever, families are fighting to make their monthly food budget last. There is no other program quite like Navidad en el Barrio.”
Let us all make sure we participate in the giving season!
