SPRINGFIELD, MA - Big Y Foods is upping its retail capabilities, adding a brand-new 425,000-square-foot distribution center next to its corporate headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts. According to local radio station, WAMC Northeast Public Radio, the new building will be twice the size of its old facility.
“We think we can accommodate another 20-30 supermarkets,” stated President and CEO Charles D’Amour in an interview with the radio station. “[…] We have 70 supermarkets today. It’s a lot of juggling and a lot of hands, and this new center will make us more efficient.”
As the retailer continues to build out its expansion plans in the coming years, D’Amour explained that this facility helps further those plans. Coming in at $46 million dollars, the project itself is expected to be finished at the end of 2019.
Equipped with state-of-the-art refrigeration systems to best protect the variety of fresh foods coming in and out, the center is locked and loaded to provide Big Y with the freshest products possible.
