As the month nears its end, more than 6,000 Dominick’s employees will be in danger of layoffs as the retailer abandons the Chicago market.

The company is laying off 332 workers at its Northlake, IL warehouse, as well as 141 workers at its Oak Brook, IL division office, bringing the total amount of employees in danger of layoffs to more than 6,000, according to Chicago Tribune. So far, only 15 out of the 72 Dominick’s stores have been sold in the Chicago area. Jewel-Osco will receive 4 of the stores, while 11 will go to Mariano’s.

Safeway spokeswoman Teena Massingill said that not all employees who received a WARN notice will actually be laid off, as the company intends for some employees to be hired by the new grocers. In fact, Mariano’s is said to be holding job fairs to fill its newly purchased stores; however, previous Dominick’s employees will not receive preferential treatment in the hiring process. Jewel-Osco will offer employment to 450 workers at its 4 Dominick’s locations.

Stay tuned to AndNowUKnow as we continue our coverage on the Dominick’s sale.

Chicago Tribune
