CORAL GABLES, FL - Thanks to the flavor innovation that has taken place in the last couple of decades, fresh fruit is now classified as a sweet treat. Legacy companies like Fresh Del Monte Produce were at the forefront of this evolution, and I sat down with Senior Director of Marketing Ivan Brown to learn more.
“From the beginning, Fresh Del Monte recognized that consumers were looking for fruit that tasted consistently great, not just fruit that looked good on the shelf. We understood early that great flavor is what earns repeat purchase and long-term trust, especially in fresh produce, where consistency matters most,” Ivan began. “We saw an opportunity to differentiate ourselves by focusing on superior flavor, sweetness, and eating experience—attributes that were often inconsistent in the global fruit market at the time. That drive for consistency and quality laid the foundation for our innovation strategy and helped us build consumer loyalty across categories.”
The Del Monte Gold® pineapple, introduced in 1996, was a turning point for the company—it proved that consumers would reward premium flavor with repeat purchase and long-term brand affinity. Its success validated Fresh Del Monte’s belief that better taste can expand a category.
“The pineapple wasn’t always a consumer-favorite fruit,” Ivan explained. “In 1980, pineapple consumption in the United States was 1.5 lbs per person annually. Our Chairman, Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh, bought Fresh Del Monte in 1996 and released the Del Monte Gold® pineapple later that year—the first new pineapple variety in 15 years. Consumption of the pineapple in the US doubled by 1999.”
That momentum encouraged Fresh Del Monte to invest in similar flavor‑forward innovation across other fruits, including bananas and melons. The supplier has applied the same principles that made Del Monte Gold® a category leader:
- Breeding and selecting varieties for superior flavor profiles
- Improving growing practices for optimal sweetness and texture
- Using controlled ripening and cold chain advancements to deliver consistent quality
“Every operational decision—from seed to store—is grounded in protecting and elevating the eating experience. For Fresh Del Monte, operations are not separate from innovation—they are how we make a premium flavor promise real at scale,” Ivan elaborated.
As he pointed out, flavor doesn’t happen by accident—it requires investment at every step. Fresh Del Monte continues to lead by:
- Investing in R&D and varietal development, working with agronomists and growers to identify fruit varieties with naturally superior taste
- Enhancing farming practices, from soil health to harvesting at peak ripeness, all designed to maximize flavor
- Strengthening its integrated supply chain, including advancements in ripening technology, cold-chain infrastructure, and logistics, to ensure fruit arrives with optimal taste and texture
- Leveraging precision agriculture and data insights to monitor quality indicators and refine its growing methods in real time
“Fresh Del Monte has always approached innovation through the lens of the consumer eating experience. Whether it’s pineapple, bananas, avocados, melons, or future fruit offerings, our focus is not simply on bringing something new to the market; it’s on delivering fruit that tastes better, performs consistently, and gives consumers a reason to come back again,” Ivan said on a final note. “That commitment to flavor, quality, and consistency is what continues to set Fresh Del Monte apart and guide how we innovate across the portfolio.”
With the Del Monte Gold® pineapple as the blueprint for evaluating and developing new fruit offerings, Fresh Del Monte is positioned for success long into the future. Stick with ANUK as we follow along.
