RIO RICO, AZ - I’ve got melons on my mind, do you? I know those at Fresh Farms sure do. The grower’s watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew programs continue to supply its buy-side partners through the end of the year and beyond. To hear what’s in store this time of year, I got in touch with Jean P Honorat, Sales, Melon Division.

Jean P Honorat, Sales, Melon Division, Fresh Farms“Melon prices have been higher than historical numbers the past few weeks,” he began. “Usually, market prices on melons tend to fall after Thanksgiving, but this year, prices have remained relatively high compared to previous years. With an expected lower demand in December, prices are expected to cool off.”

Despite cold weather conditions in growing regions in Mexico and October rains in Guatemala, Jean relayed that the market is currently steady.

“Promotional volumes have not been available on cantaloupes and honeydews due to heavy precommitments,” Jean continued. “Retailers do not usually promote watermelons in December while volumes were relatively low since October.”

As our conversation wound down, Jean also touched on quality and condition.

“The quality and condition of watermelons, cantaloupes, and honeydews has been variable. Arrivals have been from Mexico and Guatemala, and most growers have done a great job with fruit selection despite adverse weather conditions in and around the growing regions,” he concluded.

As we close out 2022 and head into the new year, ANUK will continue bringing you the latest market updates.
