Giant continues its expansion toward Philadelphia with the agreement to take over two area Genuardi’s stores from Safeway. Both will undergo remodels and are set to reopen under the Giant banner in the first quarter of next year. Worker's at the current Genuardi’s stores will have the opportunity to transfer to other stores. With the sale of the two stores, Genuardi’s will still operate 29 stores - down from 36 supermarkets that the company operated earlier this year. Maryanne Crager, a spokeswoman for Genuardi’s, stated the stores were identified as “underperforming” by Safeway, who owns Genaurdi's. Giant has been steadily pushing towards the metro Philadelphia region, with new stores and acquisitions.
