Harris Teeter President Fred Morganthall recently spoke with students at the NC State University Poole College of Management to share some of the secrets that have allowed his chain to expand despite the recession. Mr. Morganthall cited that in the midst of lowered consumer confidence, concentrating on commodity prices and quote "not on dollar sales but on customers and what they purchased" helped Harris Teeter keep its shoppers shopping. It was also revealed that Harris Teeter has its employees shop its own and competitor stores, issues web surveys, and measures time in the check-out line to gauge consumer satisfaction.
