<p>Kroger has opened its first Metro Detroit Marketplace store, as the grocer continues to expand on the retail scene. This is the first Marketplace format in Metro Detroit with the only other such Kroger concept in Michigan in Lambertville.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The 114,000-square-foot space will feature toys, home goods, baby items, shoes and clothing in addition to the company’s traditional grocery offerings, according to a report in The Detroit News.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> “The growing population in this Macomb County community makes Shelby Twp. the ideal location for our first Kroger Marketplace store in the Michigan division,” said Jayne Homco, President of The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “We designed this store to meet the needs of today’s shopper, with convenience, quality products and energy efficiency in mind.”<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The Kroger Marketplace format supports the growing trend of traditional grocers carrying addtional retail items to better compete with big-box stores that include Target, Wal-Mart and Meijer. The larger format includes a produce department with fresh-cut fruit, a deli department with fresh sushi, hot soup and a cheese area selling more than 200 specialty cheeses.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">In addition, there’s an expanded meat and seafood counter, and a bakery that includes a user-friendly bread slicer and daily made, fresh artisan bread.
