McDonald's McVegan is Added to Its International Menu

CHICAGO, IL - Plant-based fever is spreading, and its success can be measured in part by McDonald’s expanding the offering of its McVegan burger. The fast food giant decided to introduce the potato and pea constructed patty to its Chicago headquarters international menu, Drovers reports, after a successful seven-week test run in Finland's second largest city, Tampere.
"McDonalds is continually working on ideas to evolve the menu,” a company spokesperson told The Daily Meal. “Following consumer trends and expectations, the markets locally decide and test which products are more relevant and interesting for their local consumers. Many different combinations are possible at McDonald's restaurants across the globe and the launch of McVegan is another local example."
And it seems there could be more to come in the produce-based product arena if the trend continues its upward momentum.
“Plant-based protein is something we’re keeping our eye on,” Lucy Brady, McDonald’s Senior VP of Corporate Strategy, told Fortune Magazine, while Drover noted that the move is a progression from previous vegetarian options added to the fast food chain’s offerings.
The step comes one year, almost to the day, after McDonald’s added the McVegan burger to Sweden and Finland’s permanent menu.
“The test in Finland blew all the expectations out of the water," said Staffan Ekstam, McDonald's Head of Food Strategy in Sweden, in a Nordic Business Insider article at the time of the announcement.
