The retail giant Meijer Company just announced that they accumulated more than 2 million dollars worth of food through their recent Simply Give program. The annual program began on March 20th this year and ran through May 14th. It helped to stock 195 local food pantries in the cities where Meijer supermarkets are located. Through the program, shoppers purchased $10 donation cards at special displays throughout the store, as well as in Meijer gas stations and convenience shops, which are then converted into gift cards and divided evenly among the needy pantries. Meijer also matched all donations up to a total $100,000. Janet Emerson, executive vice president of operations for the Grand Rapids, Mich. Store stated: “We appreciate the support and commitment of our generous customers, as we reach out to those in our local communities who need help in the fight against hunger.” The program is just a part of the company’s characteristic altruism, as Meijer gives six percent of its annual income to assorted charities.
