GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Getting a jumpstart on its New Year’s resolutions, SpartanNash has launched a grand new operational strategy. Focused on reducing the retailer’s carbon footprint in 2022, SpartanNash’s plan includes decreasing the annual mileage of its fleet by more than seven million miles, or over 10 percent.

Through this network optimization, the retail name will eliminate almost 10,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. It will also provide faster, fresher, and more cost-effective deliveries for SpartanNash’s food retailer customers.

To meet this objective, SpartanNash is forming strategic alliances with logistics partners to improve efficiency and service for its growing network of customers from coast to coast.

According to the release, these partnerships drive supply chain efficiencies, saving an estimated one million gallons of diesel annually and representing the equivalent of more than 100 tankers of gasoline, energy for more than 1,000 homes for one year, or more than 20,000 barrels of oil. This mass reduction is equivalent to the amount of carbon released into the air and sequestered by more than 150,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
