Supervalu Inc. achieved a zero waste classification for two stores last November and has just announced their intention to expand that number to an aggressive forty-two stores in the next fiscal year. In order to be termed zero waste, a retailer must divert at least 90% of waste from a landfill. Supervalu achieved 95% diversion in their Albertsons stores using recycling, composting, and donation programs to maximize efficiency. The announcement comes with the release of Supervalu’s 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, and is only a part of the company’s campaign for sustainability. Andy Herring, Executive Vice President, stated: “"While this year's CSR report captures some of the excitement we shared in being the first food retailer to achieve zero waste in the U.S. at two of our California stores, we truly believe this is the tip of the iceberg for us."<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
