Trader Joe’s is offering up a unique way to increase carrot consumption with its Organic Carrots of Many Colors. I was out at Trader Joe’s the other day when I saw these two pound bags filled with a random assortment of USDA organic certified vibrant yellow, white, red, and orange whole carrots. I couldn’t resist giving these organic carrots a try. They all provided the same taste I know and love, but added a colorful twist that easily made this classic vegetable stand out on the plate.

Bags of multi-colored whole carrots are an uncommon sight to see in grocery stores around the country, but the different take on this choice vegetable may see more consumers like me add carrots to their grocery baskets simply out of sheer curiosity. And this is precisely what Trader Joe’s is attempting to do – target the niche market and increase carrot consumption, particularly among adventurous children who would be more willing to try something different, especially if it was their favorite color. And these different colored varieties aren’t just a novelty. Although they all contain similar health benefits, purple carrots, for example, can provide additional vitamin A when compared to a traditional orange carrot, according to Time.

Until only a few hundred years ago, carrots were most common in myriad colors, according to a Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer release. The Dutch combined a yellow carrot with a red one to create orange, their national color. These new carrots eventually became the standard by which other carrots are judged.

Can we expect to see more retailers like Trader Joe’s take a different approach to fresh produce classics to help increase their consumption? Only time will tell. For now, these colorful carrots could be a step in the right direction to start a new produce trend.

Trader Joe’s

Time
