SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA - In March of last year, Plenty, a vertical farming operation, made headlines when it tapped a Twitter exec to lead its financial arm. In addition to facility expansions, the company seemed poised to take on Northern California’s organic needs and these plans have indeed come to fruition. Now, the company’s greens are available in several Whole Foods and Safeway locations across the Bay Area.

According to a report from The SF Chronicle, boxes of baby kale, baby arugula, a bok choy and mizuna blend, and a beet leaves and fennel blend, are on shelves in three Whole Foods and one Safeway in San Francisco. The news source noted that Plenty did not specify whether or not its produce would be available in more stores.

However, Christina Ra, Plenty’s Senior Director of Integrated Marketing and Communications, wrote in an email that, “We plan to continue to expand in the months to come. This is just the start.”

As more companies invest in indoor farming, as Gordon Food Service did when it partnered with Square Roots, what does the future of supply look like? AndNowUKnow will continue to report on the latest news affecting the retail and produce landscapes.
