HANCOCK COUNTY, IN - Sometimes I underestimate the sheer operational feat of a retailer’s distribution network—especially one of Walmart’s size and scope. It’s no surprise that the retail giant would in turn need a number of gigantic facilities to keep up with consumer demand. Most recently, Walmart announced a $600 million investment in what is purported to be its largest e-commerce fulfillment center in the States.
"It's really designed to help smaller sellers scale up," said Director of Government Relations Kevin Thompson in an interview with Inside Indiana Business. "So what we'll do is we will pack, ship, and store those third-party sellers' items and then ship them out to customers on their behalf."
The facility will stand at a whopping 2.2 million square feet and sit on 200 acres in Hancock County, Indiana. Construction is expected to begin sometime this month with a completion date in the fall of 2022. Walmart noted that its full operational capacity will be reached by 2024.
With a facility of this size and operational strength, where is Walmart’s growth goal going to end? The answer, it seems, is that the limit does not exist.
