Whole Foods Goal of 1,000 US Stores in Ten Years

<p>Whole Foods Market is broadening its horizons and moving towards its goal of 1,000 stores over the next decade. The Company currently has 349 stores open totaling approximately 13.3 million square feet according to a report in The Washington Post. </p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>Whole Foods expects to open three additional stores in the third quarter and 12 stores in the fourth quarter. Whole Foods has also recently signed 10 new leases averaging 35,700 square feet in size in Mobile, AL; Burbank, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Longmont, CO; Westminster, CO; Olathe, KS; Portland, OR; Draper, UT; Arlington, VA; and Ashburn, VA. These stores currently are scheduled to open beginning in fiscal year 2014, according to a press release.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><img src="https://cdn.andnowuknow.com/legacyWriterImages/WF061013body.jpg" alt="Cropped Images June 10th 2013" /></p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>The company has opened a new discount-format in Detroit. The concept will expand through other economically struggling locations like the recent format in the Motor City, as part of its goal to reposition as a go-to grocery store for everyday staples for shoppers on any budget who are less inclined to pay the big bucks. Whole Foods will launch pilot stores in New Orleans and on Chicago's South Side in 2013 and 2014.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">This new format will feature fewer staffers, lower prices, and more frozen and prewrapped food.
