Whole Foods has introduced its one-of-a-kind Eco-Scale Rating system which allows customers to make quick and informed shopping decisions about their household cleaners. Whole Foods’ rating system is color-coded in red, orange, yellow, and green, with each color indicating the level of environmental standards a product meets and green representing the highest level. Under the Eco-Scale rating system, Whole Foods’ vendors will be required to list ingredients right on the package. Whole Foods VP of procurement Jim Speirs explained that “Shoppers have a right to know what’s actually in the products they use to clean their homes. Now, with Eco-Scale, we’re able to help shoppers buy eco-friendly products with confidence and provide safer alternatives for their households and for the planet as a whole.” Whole Foods will rate each cleaning product independently, and will require at least “orange” standards from the products it sells by Earth Day of next year.
