BAKERSFIELD, CA - Sweet potatoes! Get your sweet potatoes here! Our friends at Bako Sweet® are locked and loaded with the vegetable as we prepare for the Easter holiday. I got in touch with Alexandra Rae Molumby, Director of Marketing, to hear what’s in store this month and beyond.
“We know sweet potatoes will perform well for this celebratory time, as Easter is the third largest holiday in terms of sweet potato sales. Shoppers love using our sweet potatoes in traditional recipes such as sweet potato casserole,” Rae told me. “We have targeted marketing efforts with retailers going on right now, inspiring shoppers to visit their local grocery store and gather the ingredients they need to make a sweet potato dish for Easter.”
Looking ahead to next season, Bako Sweet is currently growing sweet potatoes in tunnels called hotbeds. The grower plants sweet potatoes in hotbeds because it traps the heat and keeps them growing right on time for harvest in the fall. Once the sweet potato slips are ready, Bako will transplant them into the fields by June.
“We are inspiring our shoppers with recipe ideas and encouraging them to visit stores and stock up on sweet potatoes now!” Rae explained. “Today’s shopper is on the hunt for something special that provides a heightened experience and less prep work. In addition to value-added offerings, Bako has some merchandising materials that are sure to drive foot traffic.
“We have some eye-catching display bins that we can ship directly to a warehouse with the order. These have proven to be extremely valuable during holiday sales when you need more room for overstock,” Rae added. “Don’t keep overstock in the back—put it in a display bin and make the sale!”
