FRESNO, CA - As we move through spring and retailers continue building big, bountiful displays of eye-catching fresh produce for meals, snacks, barbecues, and more, Baloian Farms is ensuring customers have a portfolio filled with items for consumer baskets. From red onions, bell peppers, and eggplant to chili peppers, hard squash, and zucchini, Baloian is ready to partner with retailers on current and upcoming produce department excellence.
“We’re very encouraged by what we’re seeing across our programs right now. We’ve just started packing our flat sweet red onions, and quality has been excellent with strong color, firmness, and sizing,” Jeremy Lane, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, shares. “Our field-grown red pepper program is also getting underway with very nice quality and promotable volume developing. Green pepper harvest continues in Coachella and has performed well overall, with a smooth transition to Bakersfield expected toward the end of the month. We’re also actively harvesting eggplant and chili peppers in Coachella with strong quality and good consistency. This week (since it will run next week), we’ll begin harvest on soft squash, hard squash, and green beans, so there is a lot of fresh new production coming online across multiple categories.”
Jeremy then dives into every retailer’s question as we get further into peak demand: What should they know about availability and supply consistency over the next several weeks?
“Retailers should feel confident about overall availability as we move deeper into the spring and early summer transition,” Jeremy assures. “We have multiple growing regions coming into production, which helps support continuity of supply and minimizes gaps during seasonal transitions. Volume across peppers, onions, eggplant, squash, and beans is expected to build steadily over the next several weeks, creating solid opportunities for ad activity and feature promotions. As always in agriculture, weather can create short-term fluctuations, but overall supply outlooks are favorable.”
Baloian continues to see strong demand for versatile cooking vegetables and grilling items as retailers prepare for summer merchandising. Bell peppers, squash, onions, and eggplant are benefiting from increased consumer interest in fresh cooking, outdoor grilling, and healthier meal preparation.
“Retailers are also continuing to look for strong value-oriented promotions that drive basket size while still delivering quality and consistency to consumers,” Jeremy explains. “We’re also seeing continued interest in differentiated items focused on flavor, like our flat sweet onions and our incredible sweet field-grown red peppers that help create excitement in the produce department.”
As always, Mother Nature has her own plans when it comes to the state of the season, but so far, conditions have been favorable across Baloian’s growing regions.
“Overall, our desert production has performed well, and quality has remained strong. Temperatures have generally supported good plant development and sizing, particularly in peppers and eggplant. As we transition production northward into Central California, conditions currently look favorable for continued strong quality and improved volume,” Jeremy informs me.
With that said, opportunities continue to abound for retailers looking to partner on strategies through the remainder of spring and into summer. As Jeremy notes, there are many opportunities for retailers to drive movement and promotions within these categories.
“This is an excellent time for retailers to begin building larger seasonal displays and promoting grilling and fresh cooking themes. Bell peppers, onions, squash, zucchini, eggplant, and green beans all work well together in cross-merchandising opportunities tied to summer meals and outdoor cooking,” Jeremy says. “With new crop supplies ramping up, retailers should have opportunities to promote aggressively while still maintaining strong quality on the shelf. Eye-catching displays featuring color variety and seasonal messaging can be especially effective this time of year as consumers shift into summer purchasing habits.”
As summer approaches, Baloian Farms is positioned to help retailers keep displays vibrant, promotable, and ready for strong seasonal movement.
