HILLSBOROUGH, NC – A tractor-trailer carrying bananas on Interstate 85 flipped over this past Monday, spilling bananas into the median and across all lanes.
According to local CBS affiliate WNCN, the crash occurred in the early morning hours of November 21st, around 3:45 AM, near North Carolina's 1-85/1-40 split when the driver of the truck fell asleep at the wheel.
The truck peeled off the interstate, careened into the median, flipped over the guardrail, and continued to slide until the trailer snagged on a bridge pillar at the split and tore open, discharging bananas into oncoming traffic.
The driver was, thankfully, unharmed.
Both northbound and southbound traffic on 1-85 was shutdown while crews worked to clear the fruit and truck’s wreckage. The whole process took several hours, and crews were finally able to remove the truck and clear the slippery debris by 10:00 AM.
