AUSTIN, TX - Brighter Bites is continuing to wield the power of fresh produce to help communities and families in need across the nation. Recently, the non-profit organization announced that it had reached over 3,500 families and 500 teachers in Austin, Texas, through fresh fruit and vegetable donations totaling approximately 524,000 lbs throughout the school year.

Through its program, Brighter Bites gives teachers access to Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) online nutrition lessons in addition to videos focused on produce-related activities designed to teach and encourage healthier lifestyles. According to a press release, this curriculum directly aligns with the nonprofit’s mission to distribute fresh food to students in underserved communities.

Partners of Brighter Bites’ Austin program include FreshPoint Dallas, Imperfect Foods, Taylor Farms, Chelan Fresh, Dole, B. Catalani Produce, and Urban Roots.

To raise more awareness for its Austin program, Brighter Bites participated in the International Fresh Produce Association’s Global Street Farm event during the city’s SXSW festival. Through the event, hundreds of participants gained increased awareness of the importance of bringing fresh produce to communities in need, with over 150 attendees visiting the organization’s booth where they learned about Brighter Bites’ upcoming expansion to additional cities in the coming months.
